Movies and Your Child
Excerpts from the book ‘Your Child Is Your Parent!’ by Manoj J Lekhi (Amrut Vivek).
I shared in the previous chapter that a parent needs to have awareness about the kind of music he or she exposes the child to. The same way, the parent needs to have awareness about the movies that he or she exposes the child to.
I see so many parents in theatres with small children, watching violent and action-packed movies. The more negative the movie is, the more negative the vibes that you are instilling in your child!
In their eagerness to see all kinds of movies, most parents drag their little ones along, too, not knowing what a profound effect this has on the child’s psyche.
I and my wife, Nina, were aware of this and did not expose Vedoci to any such negative movies in her early years. In fact, it was at the age of eight that she watched her first Hindi serial on TV!
What Is Negative and What Is Positive?
Anything that instills fear in the child is negative. Anything that activates the lower chakras is negative. Anything that instills joy and values in the child is positive. Anything that activates the higher chakras is positive. So be aware of what you do, what movies you see, which music you hear etc.
You may be wondering about the possibility of parents making such sacrifices. Well, it’s not a sacrifice, it’s something we do out of a deep understanding and a deep longing to give the best to our children!
It is as simple as this: ‘As you sow so shall you reap’. I am sharing this out of profound experience of being on both sides of the table. During the period of 18 to 25 years of age, I was exposed to all that the modern young college kids tend to get exposed to: drinking, smoking, and always being negative and cynical about anything and everything.
I was fortunate to have been able to do the SSY programme at the age of 25; it transformed my life, from a negative to an extremely positive person. Now I always view the glass as half full rather than half empty. I have complete mastery of my life and would love it if you as a parent had the same!
I reiterate with emphasis that it is not difficult to change oneself.
Just learn the science of looking within as part of the process of samadhi (which we teach in SSY) and the change will happen effortlessly.
Everything you do or don’t do has a profound effect on your child. So, remember, if you make the desired change in yourself, your child will invariably follow suit!
If you notice, there are so many subtle ways in which your child nudges you into watching good movies and avoiding those that should be avoided. There are movies that help to generate positivity in your being; also, there are those that cause fear and disturbance. Watching films like Ghajini, The Exorcist, The Omen, The Evil Dead etc. leaves us with considerable fear and negativity. So, be aware of what you should let your child watch. This can only change if you are aware about what you was.
In the process, along with him, it gets ensured that you too end up watching movies that lift your spirits up rather than make you negative. Your child is as much your parent as you are his!
