It’s all about our Attitude!

Excerpt from the book ‘Are you a Super Leader?’ by Manoj J Lekhi.

It is our attitude towards life which makes us experience life as pleasure or pain or as heaven or hell.

We have coined a 95-5 Principle, which says you cannot have a say in 5% of things that happen to you in your life (the events) but you can definitely have a say in 95% of things that happen to you in your life (the responses to the events). It means that, we do not have a say in unforeseen incidents like accidents, natural calamities, bomb blasts etc. Things happen and we may be on the receiving side of a situation but we definitely have a say in how we respond to the situation.

Most people in the world are in a ‘reaction’ mode all the time. What we suggest is, go into a ‘response’ mode rather than a ‘reaction’ mode. One moves from reaction to response by flipping one’s attitude.

As goes the saying, we can see a half-filled glass perceiving it to be half full or half empty; it is our attitude. Most people see the glass half empty when they complain about their health, spouse, inner unrest, etc. Let us say someone has diabetes or a heart problem or blood pressure or any physical pain. Most people complain ‘Why me? Why this? Why God? Why me? Why not someone else?’ And all the time they are passing the buck outside for the state of unrest that lies within. Instead they could look upon it as ‘God has given this to me for some particular reason’, and try to discover the reason for the same. This is the flip in attitude that we are talking about. One can say, ‘Because I have this pain in my head I realize I have a head’. We can see and value that part of the body and also heal it with tremendous love and care. Conversely, most of the time we only complain about it.

For example, when our spouse shouts at us, nags us, we can either keep complaining or take it as an opportunity to be firm in doing our sadhana and evolve in consciousness. Hence we can use the same situation to grow inwards rather than react. If someone cheats me or ditches me, I can curse the hell out of that person. In this way I am only adding poison to my own system. Instead I can look at it as ‘It was never mine so God took it away and relieved me of the pain of taking care of that particular object or thing.’ It’s all about our attitude, attitude towards life.

I remember a story about Buddha which I once read. One of his disciples Purnakashyap, approached Buddha and said, ‘I want to go and spread your message in this remote village called Sukha in Bihar.’

Buddha replied, ‘You can go anywhere but do not go to this place as people there are very rude and violent’. Purnakashyap insisted, ‘Please allow me to go there’. Buddha replied, ‘Alright, provided you answer a few questions’.

Buddha questioned. ‘Suppose you go there and people shout at you, how would you feel?’ Purnakashyap replied, ‘I will feel very nice because they are only shouting, they could have cursed me’. Then Buddha asked. ‘Suppose they curse you, how will you feel?’ He replied, ‘Still I will feel very nice because they could have beaten me but they only cursed me’. Buddha asked again, ‘If they beat you, how will you feel?’ ‘I will still feel happy as they could have killed me but they only beat me’. Lastly, Buddha asked. ‘If they kill you how will you feel?’ He replied, ‘If they kill me I will still be thankful that they have freed me from this karmic world and I could have made so many mistakes which they relieved me from doing in future’.

Buddha finally replied and told Purnakashyap ‘Now you can go not only to Sukha province but anywhere in the world because wherever you go you will experience heaven’.

It is our attitude which makes us experience heaven or hell. A Super Leader always has an attitude of seeing the half glass of water as full. Yes, he is also aware of the other half being empty but he focuses on the fullness. He isn’t deluded; he just chooses to focus on the part which is productive. This attitude towards life happens when we delve into our own inner happiness. We touch our inner core through meditation, deeper silence and retreats, and so awareness automatically increases. This awareness and silence helps us develop a responsive attitude.

A Super Leader always corrects his/her attitude and brings it in alignment with his/her highest self.
